Trading back links function like this. You have to put your link to your site on someone else’s site and they will then be able to put their website link on your site. It is a link swap. But, there has been loads of controversy about these types of links.

Do they work to help improve your ranking in the search engines? Do they harm your page ranking? should you even trouble yourself by taking part in them? To answer these questions, lets take a moment to think of both sides of the situation. When it comes to the final results, for most website owners, is the fact that they are capable of aiding you.

A couple reasons why mutual links may not be helpful. When reciprocal links first began to be used, it was a exchange between one site owner and another. If you were skillful in the home decorating business, for instance, it would be rewarding to join with and get a link to a company that provides windows. You both would benefit from trading links.

When they started out and the website owners utilized this theory, they found that their websites did in reality rank there sites better. In point of fact, it worked so good  that they went out and searched for more and more link exchanges.

And because of this lies the trouble. Instead of doing work with other web masters to build a professional relationship and build a reciprocal link that rewarded both sites, many website developers realized that they could purchase  these links instead.

And now, they didn’t need to go to the difficulty of luring in those that they would like to get links from, rather, they could just purchase them. Okay, this isn’t such a bad thing, right? The trouble was that site owners were buying and utilizing thousands of reciprocal links for their web page. This is entirely unnatural and it simply didn’t work out good for them.

But why did it change? The search engine algorithm’s soon became wise to this scheme of how to get your website to rank higher. So the major search engines built programs that would spot this technique and the fact that individuals that were utilizing this huge amount of reciprocal links in this manner, were ranked WORSE!
