If you make a visit to the majority of the webmaster forums online, the one argument that seems to ensue is the value of blog commenting for earning one way backlinks. However, a diverse range of backlink types within your backlink structure is always going to look good in Google’s eyes, as this looks natural. To use an example, lets say that site (a) has 400 backlinks that originates just from article directories, and site (b) has 400 backlinks, in equal quantity from article directories, blog comments, forum posts, RSS directories, and so on and so forth. Which one looks more natural?

Now, if we head back to the various questions and debates that we see in the various forums online, I am going to have to be as blunt as possible. On its own, blog commenting is an inefficient method of generating one way backlinks, and in all cases, something that you should not focus a large amount of time on. However, earning backlinks from a variety of sources is always going to be a great idea, as such, blog commenting when used to balance out a diverse link structure is extremely effective.

So, you thought we were done, right? Wrong. There is another part to this debate, and that involves the value of follow and nofollow links. Many webmeisters will only target blogs that allow follow links in their comments, which is in itself a bad idea. Part of a natural backlink structure involves earning backlinks from various sources, and that most definitely includes follow and nofollow links. If you can imagine it, a website that has only follow links pointing to it wouldn’t look all that natural would it? This also applies to pages of varying PageRank as well.

In just about every scenario, the better methods involve completely forgetting about PageRank and followable links. The best methodology involves seeking backlinks from a variety of sources, that are a variety of types. It is as simple as that. Your end goal involves looking as natural to Google as possible as to avoid any possible penalisation, what most SEO people refer to as being “The Google Slap”.

Here are are several  guidelines  on where you should be using keywords on your website and how:

  1. In the URL: Using keywords in the URL is  crucial  because search engines can match the words in the URL with the content of the website. While many popular search engines don’t reveal their algorithms for  how they place websites  , it is a common belief that using keywords in the URL can help when the words are related to the website’s content.
  2. In the title of the article:  Many  search engines assess the content at the top of the page more than they value the content that is at the bottom of the page . Due to this, article titles are always near the top of the page and keywords should be used in the title. 
  3. In the content of the website: Once again, search engines feel that the content near the top of the page is more important than content at the bottom. This is in truth common sense; if you have important data, why would you list it at the bottom of the page? Often times , people will not read whole articles or if they cannot find the information they are looking for in the first few paragraphs, then they will quit reading it. Keywords will inform people what the article’s  point  is and it will also inform the search engines of the purpose. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t spread your keywords out in the article or content, but they should at least be mentioned in the top portion of the article or content.
  4. Don’t overuse the keywords: Getting more into depth on #3, make sure that you are not keyword stuffing. Keyword stuffing is when you use keywords excessively and search engines can penalize websites for this. A good idea is to keep keywords around 3%-5% of the total article or content. 

There are  several  ways to use keywords properly on a website or blog and  the ones listed above are just a few  . However, you get a good idea on how you can ethically and easily start using them to gain ground in the search engines.
